I know this seems like another stupid American question. It probably is, but I couldn’t find anything online that said you definitely could be married there. One would think it would be an easy enough answer to find, but I have found it’s not. It also seems like it’d be one of those really sacred places that Italians would try & keep Americans from contaminating or whatever they think we do. . . Since Il Duomo di Firenze e la Cattedrale Santa Maria del Fiore are some of the most visited places in Europe and the world… It houses multiple famous sites like the Cupola del Brunelleschi, the Giotto’s Campanile, the Florence Baptistery, the Loggia del Bigallo, the Opera del Duomo Museum, and the Arcivescovile, Canonici’s palace, and is right beside San Giovanni square…

Now, I ALREADY KNOW there are dozens of places, if not more, that offer Italian weddings in & around Florence, I’ve looked them up. So everyone that sends a link to a random website that plans weddings around Florence, you FAIL – Thumbs Down, learn to read & think before you act. This is not a question you can simply google & spit out a website, UNlike most Y! questioners I’ve already tried that. I am normally an answerer anyway. . .

Problem is, most of these sites say they can, & I quote, "offer weddings in a magnificent palace dating back 11th Century… or a religious wedding in a famous, historical church in the center of Florence… or in a 5 star hotel, or in the villa of a famous noble family, or in a private garden villa, etc, etc, the options are endless. "

They never come out & say WHICH famous, historical church in the center of Florence… So who knows if they are referring to the Basilica di Santa Maria… or the Santa Maria Novella, San Lorenzo, Santo Spirito, the Orsanmichele, the Great Synagogue of Florence, or one of the other 21 monumental religious centers in Florence.

The question isn’t to be used right away, which is why I’m not calling up Florence marriage businesses & wasting those people’s time. I’m not looking to get married right now, but I do have someone in mind & I think she would love this location as much as I do. I know I would still want to be married in Florence, even if I end up with someone else who might not like that city or may prefer somewhere else. So, I’m not really asking as some hopeless romantic, I’m just asking for me & so I know what I’m looking at in terms of savings & financial planning.

First of all, calm down. If you are ever going to face your wedding with the same agitated attitude you use in this question, it is not going to be a pleasant experience for you nor your future wife.

To answer your question: You can get married in ANY Italian church only if you are a catholic or a mixed catholic-protestant-other religion couple (meaning at least one of you has to be catholic). You have to have received all the appropriate catholic sacraments (baptism, communion and confirmation).

To get married in Santa Maria del Fiore, be ready to pay quite a lot of money (the Italian Church usually asks for an offering and then immediately proceeds telling you what the minimum offering is: the more famous the church, the higher the offering required), and be on a long waiting line.

My suggestion? If you are catholic, ask your priest or, even better, Bishop, to act as an intermediary between you and the church you intend to get married in. It will be much easier to get all the required documents ready, and you will probably skip some of the waiting times…

Otherwise, you can get married in Palazzo Vecchio, Florence’s city hall. Once again, for a fee and with a long waiting list, but anyone can get married here.
